The eye is one of the most vital organs of our body, without which we are denied the ability to appreciate everything beautiful in life.
Yet many are doing without eyeglasses because they cannot afford them.
Children is no exception.
Studies shown that nearly seven out of ten children under the age of six have never been to an eyecare specialist for an eye exam.
It’s such a pity that those who could least afford regular eyecare are not entitled to free eyeglasses and free eye exam.
But not anymore.
Free Eyeglasses for Children
The concept for providing free quality eyecare to children of low-income, uninsured families was first coined by Retired General Colin Powell in 1997 during his nationally televised, “America’s Promise” speech.
Since it began in 1997, thanks to Vision Service Plan (VSP), up to 50,000 children every year receive a free comprehensive eye exam and free eyeglasses if needed through “Sight for Students®” program.
How to be eligible for free eyeglasses?
To begin, you need to determine if your kid is qualified for free eyecare by referring to their ‘eligibility guidelines’.
Briefly, the basic guidelines include
- Family income is no more than 200% of the federal poverty level
- No Medicaid or other vision insurance
- Child is no more than 18 years old and has not graduated from high school
- Child or parent is a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant with a social security number
- Child has not used the program during the last 12 months.
After establishing a legitimate need, the parent of the child will then receive a “Share the Vision Gift Certificate” and make appointment with any of the VSP network eye doctor of their choice.
After the exam, you or the child will be asked to choose a pair of eyeglasses if needed.
So if you have been struggling with the high cost of eyecare, Sight for Students® is definitely a great option for free eye exam and free eyeglasses if necessary.
